Roland’s Early-digital Drum Machine Marvel!

With the TR-909, Roland waded into the waters of sample-based digital drum machines, equipping the mostly analog unit with digital hats and cymbals to satisfy electronic musicians hungry for more realistic sounds. In 1985, Roland released the TR-707 Rhythm Composer, completing their digital drum machine transition. The TR-707 retained the intuitive step sequencer that helped propel both the TR-808 and TR-909 into the pantheon of legendary drum machines, but its core was entirely digital, relying on 8-bit and 6-bit sample playback of PCM waveforms. The result was a drum machine with the characteristic grit and punch of early-digital devices — a sound that has found renewed favor with modern producers, including many here at Sweetwater. The Roland Cloud TR-707 is a meticulous software emulation of Roland’s now-legendary digital drum machine, bringing the 707 flavor to the computer-based audio environment. With an interface that mimics the look and feel of the hardware unit, the Roland Cloud TR-707 invites you to indulge in some '80s nostalgia, yet its expanded features — such as a more robust sequencer and advanced sound-shaping options — make it a superb fit for contemporary productions.

Roland Legendary Series

The Roland Legendary Series of software synthesizers comprises a formidable lineup of classic analog and digital synths. From Roland’s earliest forays into synthesis, including the System-100 semi-modular mono synth, to their legendary TR-808 and TR-909 rhythm composers and groundbreaking digital synthesizers, such as the JV-1080, the Roland Legendary Series includes a pantheon of synth titans. Using state-of-the-art Analog and Digital Circuit Behavior technologies, Roland has captured the essence of their legacy synths. With the original hardware versions becoming ever rarer and commanding exorbitant prices on the collectors’ market, fewer and fewer people will ever lay their hands on a real Juno-106, Jupiter-8, or any of these icons. But, with the Roland Legendary Series, you can own them all in a convenient and affordable software format. Pining for that legendary Roland sound? Then go straight to the source with Roland’s Legendary Series of software synthesizers.

Pretty, that's it.

In the 80's my father, a sax player, purchased a Roland TR-707. He never really used it, but I did! This was a great sounding, logical, and easy to use piece of hardware for drumming. The User Manual was clear and concise. Creating drum patterns, then stringing them together to create a song was a breeze, even for the "drumming challenged" like myself. The LCD Matrix was a blessing. Sadly, a few years ago, it died. Since then I've been on a quest to find a drum machine that works in a similar fashion. I've been through them, Zoom, Boss, even the Roland TR-08, bought and sold. So when I saw Roland had released a software version of the TR-707, I was thrilled. It installed easily on my Mac Mini, and I was able to bring it into my Studio One DAW, seeing the TR-707 on my screen, like seeing an old friend. Great! However, that was where the excitement ended. This software works nothing like a Hardware TR-707. I can't figure out what the purpose is of the 16 voice buttons do other than to demo a that sound. Creating a pattern is a chore from the LCD Matrix, or optional block view. Saving a Pattern is do-able, I no idea how to build a song chaining patterns. I can drag & drop a pattern in the DAW, but adding additional patterns they just overlap? Makes no sense, since I've done similar with the built-in Virtual instrument called Impact in Studio One. The user manual is near useless. You can learn slightly more from the Sales Pitch Demo. Roland, make another TR-707 modern drum machine. Charge the $ you want. My quest continues, a $ lesson learned, onto a Behringer RD8 MKII next.

Simply put, modern electronic music wouldn't exist without Roland. Many of the electronic musicians here at Sweetwater cut our teeth on TR Rhythm machines and fondly remember programming our first TB-303s. We owe a good part of our careers to this amazing and innovative company. It's been fun to watch and grow right alongside Roland, as they've introduced wave after wave of revolutionary keyboards, digital pianos, and more. For example, Roland's V-Drum Kits continuously redefine the possibilities of electronic drums, beginning with SuperNATURAL technology to the latest Prismatic Sound Modeling. We're huge fans, and we'd love to tell you all about them. Whether you want a pocket-sized synth or a cutting-edge video mixer, if Roland makes it, then Sweetwater is 100% behind it.
